Open Thread: Ultimate Boba Tea Flavor Championship
This is the thread where we will try to decide what the totally best flavor for bubble tea is. As you know, boba comes in a lot of flavors, so it’s often difficult to decide what kind you should get. In this thread we will try to reach some consensus, which will help future generations with their decision-making process.
I know Lia Cheesedip will cast her lot in with taro. Personally I feel the best flavor is lychee snow, and I am after all the beverage expert, or “bevpert.” Still, I’d like to entertain other suggestions from the audience. I really love you guys a lot.

Almond with milk.

Peanut milk tea. With real peanut. I like taro well enough but a lot of those places use taro powder, which is too sweet for me. Also there’s a place in Chicago that has avacado bubble tea: that is gross.

it’s impossible to find but: cocoro. it’s coconut + taro. i had it at a place in austin that has since closed, and let me tell you: HEAVEN ON EARTH. now i just get taro root, almond, or sometimes a fruity one, but they are a distant second to the cocoro bubble tea of my dreams.

I generally just go with original - “milk tea” or whatever - but when I’m feeling frisky I have any variation of the “yoghurt” flavour, it tastes like Yakult. Lactobaccilicious!

It’s taro, although, I am open the the possibility of changing my mind should I ever get the chance to try cocoro.

I’m also about the taro. …But I’m also a big fan of taro ice cream and taro buns and fried taro and whatever else is made of taro.
I would also say coconut, but WHAT, THERE IS COCORO, I DEMAND COCONUTY TARO ACTION.

Honeydew is my personal preference.

I like mango-green tea. It’s like if aliens and dinosaurs had sex and made a delicious baby of awesomeness.

i googled cocoro and the only mention i found was from yimay’s blog talking about the same place in austin that has since closed. so basically, the world will just have to take yimay’s and my word for it that cocoro is the total winner.

Great. This debate is basically degenerating into heresay and black magik.

i second lychee. with tapioca pearls, of course. honeydew a close second. don’t even go near star fruit. stupid fruit doesn’t even have a proper name, how can it make a decent bubble cup?
June 14th, 2007 at 5:53 pm
peach tea. its a little less assulting than the milky versions. but i suppose every now and then you gots-ta-get-creamy

For those of you cocoro lovers, why don’t you order the two flavors, taro and coconut mixed??? We own a bubble tea shop and lots of people order that mix! I wonder if it tastes different?
Personally, I love Lychee w/ Lychee jellies

Lavender. Y ou have no idea.
June 17th, 2007 at 1:04 pm
I go with lychee with the tapioca pearls. Yum!
June 17th, 2007 at 7:27 pm
oooh - lavender! I’ve had lav. ice cream and champagne, but not bubble tea. To the teamobile!
June 18th, 2007 at 4:23 pm
one of you is in champaign/urbana, right? where can i get bubble tea there? oh - and my vote goes to plain milk black tea with bubbles. i’ve had bad experiences with too much flavoring that messed up my whole drink.
June 18th, 2007 at 4:32 pm
@mollie: You can get bubble tea in Campustown at a place called Evo.

ahh - thank you!!

I find this thread to be unsatisfyingly unconcluded. Everyone just yelled his or her favorite and backed right down. WELL NOT ME. Peanut bubble tea for the win, unless anyone wants to fight me, in which case, I bet you don’t know where to find me.

I think it’s pretty clear that taro and lychee are the main contenders, and since I am the head of the Lychee faction, I declare it the winner. Oye oye, shout it from the rooftops, black smoke from the chimney, the Ultimate Boba Tea Flavor has been chosen.

I know this is over, but I wanted to mention that I tried a durian-fruit bubble tea recently. I was drawn to this one particular boba shop in Chinatown Boston because the drinks are only $2.50 there and they use real fruit and not powders for flavor. So I decided I had to try the durian at least once. And I did. And it was awful. Then it got kind of good. Then it got awful again. I threw it away at this point. My friend got strawberry which turned out to be delicious.
Also they put a lot of pearls in the drink, so many that you are likely to have some leftover after finishing the actual tea, an occurance I’ve never experienced before.
July 13th, 2007 at 4:00 pm
I vote for Taro… And its great when there are leftover pearls.. and innocent bystanders… SPLOCK! right between the eyes…
Bubble Tea is the Best.

I tried lavender today … it *was* lavender … with chunks of real lavender. That I was not expecting.

TARO!!!!
the only problem is having to spend 5bucks on a very addictive drink each week… well lets just say i am starting to feel it in my pocket. i need to start making this at home! it looks easy enough.
July 19th, 2007 at 8:07 pm
Always tapioca. My fav flavs (from the few I’ve had) would be either mango or green tea, mmmm . ..
July 20th, 2007 at 11:29 am
Making boba at home is possible, but it’s a pain in the butt to time out the cooking of the pearls correctly.

Momoko’s in Austin on 24th Street has Cocoro and it is delicious!
